Why I Teach, What I Teach, and How My Students Teach Me
Having taught proposal writing at the university level for 10 years, Jody will share the class’ purpose, the people and path that made it possible, highlights from its curriculum and outcomes, and the importance of experiential education. She will also explain how the experience is a two-way street, acknowledging how she learns as much from her students as they learn from her.

Curse Of Knowledge
Imagine a world where everyone understands each other. Gobbledygook and gibberish have been eradicated. Complex and obscure language has been stamped out. The age of clarity has dawned. To triumph over the evil of incomprehensible prose, we need to understand the curse of knowledge. We need to admit how difficult it is to imagine what it is like for someone else not to know something that we know. Only through this admission can we start to learn how to express ourselves more clearly. During this session, we will explore how the curse of knowledge is cast including the spells of “chunking” and “functional fixity”. We will then consider how to stir up an antidote by mixing empathy and examples with straightforward and concrete language. And to check the antidote has worked, we will embrace the role of the validator.
