Nowadays people are concerned that artificial intelligence (AI) will kick out women in the workplace. The concerns might be valid, but it is important to look at AI optimistically. As a matter of fact, it is highly likely that this era which is marked by the rise of AI will benefit and belong to women. After all, who run the world? GIRLS.

Undoubtedly, there are some issues that could be worrisome towards women. Some AI tools may favour men more than women since women are less represented in the workplace. Machines collect and analyze historical data which means that it can continue patterns that were in the past into the future. To add on, in the AI industry 78% of the workers are men. Not only do they have control of what is going to happen in the future, but they have one of the greatest jobs in this age.

Remember, only a small amount of jobs in the future comprise of the use of algorithms. Women will have the advantage that majority of the jobs are reshaped and revalued. Even though machines are getting better at cognitive tasks, they still are not perfect. Jobs that are highly paid and require high-skills are better off in the hands of people with emotional intelligence rather than technology and machines. Machines do not know how to creatively problem solve issues, empathize with others, make negotiations, and persuade others when needed. Research shows that women are better at these cognitive skills than men. In fact, it is more probable that women end up in a highly skilled cognitive job than a man. A man does what he can, a woman does what a man cannot. The high demand in jobs dealing with emotional intelligence has given women an advantage.

There is still a long way to close the gender gaps in jobs and no appreciation of the emotional skills needed in certain jobs, such as a therapist and social worker, which continue to be underpaid in this economy. We should be persuading little kids that girls can do coding too and that boys are allowed to show their emotions and empathize with others as well. For a change, instead of saying “soft skills”, it should be called “robot-proof skills” that both genders need to face the 21st century. It all starts somewhere.
